There's no means of electronic communications that are secure.
Your phones, especially your smart phones, can get you into some serious trouble by providing LEO with evidence. Don't use them. Leave them at home so they can't be used as a GPS locator.
Just sayin'.
Faraday Cage! Easily built. Build one so you can drop a phone right in. They can slide right into your pocket. GPS dead, but so is your signal until you take it out to use it.

all without any of the sound or visual prompts they'd normally generate when so doing

hell, even my drone-phone appends GPS lat-long to a pic it takes, so use old-fashioned compass triang to mark key sites
