Pvt Lane

Today was the day that my nephew/brother left for the Army.
I say nephew/brother because my folks raised him and his 2 sisters after my sister died back in 97.

He's going to do his basic training at Leonard Wood and then Sam Houston for his medical training.
It's a decision that he made a year or so back but has had a hell of a time getting in. The biggest holdup was the fact that he attended a charter school, essentially home-schooled. He had to get a waiver as well as a few college credits for that, then he's been waiting for a while for a seat in his school. But he took advantage of the wait and started training his body, working out every day and taking martial arts. He's turned into a hard little fuck.
I know that the reason he's going in is because he can't find anything around here, but at the same time I know that he knows he owes his Nation a great debt for the freedoms he enjoys and 4 years of his life is a small price to pay. If he doesn't realize that now, he will by the time his enlistment is up.

Then he can be a III Percent Patriot when he gets out. We can use folks with combat medic skills. Let Uncle Sam train 'em and send 'em right back home to train us, thank you very much.

So me and Lisa went over yesterday to get our goodbyes done. We had a little chat alone and I told him a few facts of life, like if he came crashing through my door on a raid I would shoot him in the eyeball. Pass the word to his buddies.
Having the talk

But I'm proud as hell of him. He's carrying on a family tradition, he's repaying a debt, and he's taking initiative to move in a postive direction with his life. He's now a Man.

I ask that you keep him in your thoughts and prayers and I'll keep you abreast of his whereabouts.

  1. Good luck to him. Fort Sam...many memories, the training wasn't bad either. Just tell him not to let the Riverwalk, or female 68W candidate hose monsters get too distracting. I can think of a lot worse places to have A.I.T.

  7. The Riverwalk, oh yes how I remember, and the Lone Star brewery, heaven. I was a Medic my first enlistment then went on to being a DAGBY. (Dumb Ass Gun BunnY)

Godspeed to him, he now begins an adventure of a lifetime, he will get out of it everything he puts into it.

My Father, Brother, Son, Daughter, Son-in-Law, and myself have all served, all together we have 12 years in Combat Zones in various wars.

WWII, Vietnam, Gulf War I, and Iraq x7, we are a military family, he now becomes part of family also.

My boy did similar last year 68W basic at Benning, AIT at Sam Huston, now billeted at Bragg. Good MOS as you've noted. Good civilian prospects. We've also found an opportunity for Army air (helos) if the boy has good enough eyes.....will send physical addy via email so he has local contact, we're outside KC MO-anytime if trouble.....
You have every right to be very proud---

  13. Good luck to him, and good job to those who helped raise him for instilling that sense of pride in being an American and recognizing that real Americans owe a debt for freedom and Liberty. It ain't free, and it takes hard work to maintain.

    Good on you all.

  14. If he was enlisting for citizenship he would have gotten the green light right away. For some odd reason USAREC (US Army Recruiting Command) is making it hard for citizens to enlist.

Did my basic training (childhood) under my commanding officer (dad) who was a US Army Ranger.

  16. God Bless him for his courage and dedication to this country. My son has been in the navy for 5 + years and his wife has been in for 4+ years. she was going to get out and my son encouraged her to look at her dad's and my situation and look for work before getting out. She re-upped. So we understand some of his reasoning for joining. Once again God Bless him.

  17. He is joining a small, though hugely loyal, family. We, veterans, are a true 1% of USA.
