That used to be a hanging offence

BRISTOW, Okla. (KFOR) – A 50-year-old man has been sentenced and ordered to pay restitution after stealing calves and one cow last year from his employer.

Clarence Henry Burger was arrested August 5, 2019, on criminal charges filled within the District Court of Creek County. Perrier said Burger stole seven head of mixed calves and one cow from an absentee landowner who had hired him to manage his ranch.

  1. Moral of the story...
Never hire a man named Burger to protect your cattle.

  2. The key to sentencing: 1. The owner was from the Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas, area; 2. the owner was an absentee landowner who didn't take care of his own cattle. Twenty-plus years ago a DFW man bought a piece of land in Choctaw County, Okla., and immediately fenced the land and applied for federal assistance in making part of the land protected wet lands. The land had been used for grazing by several cattle owners, who did not take kindly to the Texas man upsetting things. Fences were cut and cattle were shot. The landowner one day was shot dead by a local cattle owner, right in front of a federal range officer. The local assistant state prosecutor announced she would not prosecute the case. She was fired within a few days. The case wound up in federal court, where a jury found the shooter guilty. Several years later, he was released on time served. States west of the Mississippi often see things through different experiences than do ones east of the big river.

  3. My junior year in high school, we had a school cancel their football program at the last minute. We found a school 3 hours away, just near the Mackinaw bridge, who was similar to our size, to play that week. The reason that the school had to cancel their football program? Half of the team got caught pig rustling. I don't know if any of them did jail time, but I do know that they had to pay restitution.
The team we played had won the state championship the previous year. We beat them 20-12. Funny how you remember things like that, but you forget where you put your damn car keys.
