Nashville seems to have had an increase in the number of overdoses since March, according to statistics the city’s Metro Public Health Department provided Tuesday.
Mid-March was right around the same time that local, state, and federal officials in the United States first restricted people’s movements and other freedoms because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The number of overdose deaths for March, April, and May of this year are substantially higher than March, April, and May of last year, according to the Metro Public Health data.

First-Time Gun Buyers Explain How Coronavirus Changed Their Politics
Scott Kane went 38 years without ever touching a gun. That streak would have continued had it not been for the coronavirus. In March, fearful of the harassment his wife and child experienced over their Asian ancestry, Kane found himself in a California gun shop. His March 11 purchase of a 9mm would have been the end of the story, were it not for a political standoff over shutdown orders and background checks. Now Kane, a former supporter of gun-control measures and AR-15 bans, is frustrated by the arduous process that has denied his family a sense of security. The pandemic has made the soft-spoken software engineer an unlikely Second Amendment supporter.
"This has taken me, a law-abiding citizen with nary an unpaid parking ticket to my name, over a month," he told the Washington Free Beacon. "Meanwhile Joe Bad Guy has probably purchased several fully automatic AK-47s out of the back of an El Camino in a shady part of town with zero background checks."

Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) said this past weekend that Joe Biden and other Democrats take black voters for granted and that President Donald Trump, a Republican, has a record of success with African Americans.
Blackburn said this when she appeared on FOX News.
As The Tennessee Star reported, Biden last week belittled any black voters who would not vote for him.
To that, Blackburn told FOX News host Sandra Smith that Biden “must have missed the lesson from his mother.”
“Think before you speak,” Blackburn said.

Making its home in woodlands, neighborhood gardens, shrublands, and wetlands, the distinctive body is a favorite among amateur bird enthusiasts — especially the males which sport a vibrant red, compared to females’ reddish olive color.

(AP) -- Only about half of Americans say they would get a COVID-19 vaccine if the scientists working furiously to create one succeed, according to a new poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research.

That’s surprisingly low considering the effort going into the global race for a vaccine against the coronavirus that has sparked a pandemic since first emerging from China late last year. But more people might eventually roll up their sleeves: The poll, released Wednesday, found 31% simply weren’t sure if they’d get vaccinated. Another 1 in 5 said they’d refuse.

For fuck's sake, leave those soldier's graves alone
On Memorial Day, a holiday meant to mourn those in the U.S. military who have died while serving their country, a group of lawmakers took the opportunity to call out what they see as a stain on two veterans cemeteries in Texas and Utah.

Tom Threepersons
Mention the name Tom Threepersons in New York or Chicago, and you’ll probably evoke a small response. But to utter this full-blooded Cherokee Indian’s name along the Mexican border is to inspire a string of yarns stretching from the Gulf of California to the Gulf of Mexico, from the Yukon to Chihuahua. He was the last of the famous Gunfighting law officers, and his career extended well into the 20th century.
The history of Threepersons is somewhat enigmatic. Though many know his name and have heard of an exploit or two of his, no one I’ve met is really qualified to write his biography. John Voliva, a U.S. Customs Special Agent and gun collector in El Paso, Texas, recently acquired a Smith & Wesson Triplelock .44 Special and a Winchester Model 94 .30-30 carbine Threepersons sold to an El Paso saloon owner in 1929. Choking Out Our Freedoms
I was perusing the internet for stories about the communist Chinese government’s brutal crackdown on Hong Kong’s pro-democracy demonstrators, who were protesting new national security laws and a measure criminalizing “disrespect” for the national anthem. There was a chilling video of police in riot gear firing rubber bullets at and spraying a chemical irritant on the generally peaceful crowd, but then I noticed the story’s dateline: Minneapolis.
Oops, these were scenes from a different brutal government. Several hundred U.S. protesters had taken to the streets after a video circulated of a Minnesota officer calmly kneeling for several minutes on the neck of an unarmed man named George Floyd. Meanwhile, three other officers helped subdue Floyd, who didn’t seem to be resisting arrest (the police claim he was), but could be heard groaning, “Please, please, please, I can’t breathe” and “Don’t kill me.”

My opinion on the incident? That man did not deserve to die and the cops involved need to be charged with homicide.
My opinion of the protests? They were warranted, but as usual they got out of hand and the focus has shifted from a legitimate demonstration of outrage to violence and looting. There was no justification in burning down businesses and rampaging through stores.

Warehouse Fire Devastates San Francisco’s Fishing Industry
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A huge fire that tore through a warehouse on San Francisco’s Fisherman’s Wharf has destroyed fishing gear used to deliver about two-thirds of the city’s fresh seafood, threatening to disrupt the upcoming Dungeness crab season, local fishermen said Sunday.
The fire erupted before dawn Saturday and wiped out the warehouse the size of a football field near the end of Pier 45.

I don't think San Francisco's fishing industry was all that big to begin with. I've been to Fisherman's Wharf during salmon and crab season and the same amount of boats were tied up there as during the off-season. I've never seen any boats off-loading their catch.

In Praise of Pointy Things
To judge by conversations with friends and acquaintances over the years, my family isn't the only one to treat the gifting of a knife as a rite of passage. It's an acknowledgment that the recipient has passed a milestone, having become sufficiently familiar with spatial relationships and mortality to avoid severing anything too terribly important from themselves or others. It's also the entrusting of a reliable tool, perhaps the most useful one that humans have invented and can own.

Cue ominous voice: "It's not a matter of if, but when..."
With two barren peaks that rise only about 170 feet above sea level, the now extinct Pūhāhonu volcano in the Northwestern Hawaii Islands doesn’t look like much. This is especially true since in the same archipelago, Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa tower over every other volcano at over 13,000 feet above sea level.
Scientists at the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa have proved that looks can be deceiving.
A new study published in the Earth and Planetary Science Letters journal establishes that Pūhāhonu is the largest shield volcano in the world, taking Mauna Loa’s title.

Reminds me of some of the builds I've seen on PSA's Facebook page
I've seen some good builds on that page but I've also seen some seriously WTF ones as well.
I saw one a couple weeks ago where the guy had so much shit on there that he'd have to hunt for the trigger. It had a high mount scope with a red dot on top of that, flashlight, laser, iron sights on the rail, offset iron sights, a foregrip, and I swear to God, a fucking bayonet - AND PEOPLE WERE COMPLIMENTING HIM ON IT!!!
My ARs? A red dot, iron sights and a quick detachable sling. My house AR has a flashlight in addition to that.
Keep it simple, stupid.
HAHAHAHA!!!

On Saturday night, WGN’s Gaynor Hall delivered a report from Shorewood, IL about the damages that the local area sustained from a recent windstorm. However, as Hall was giving the lead-in for her prepared news package, a man (who was not wearing any protective equipment in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic) ran into the shot, grabbed onto Hall and shouted “f*ck her right in the pussy” at the camera.

Detective, nurse, confidant: Virus tracers play many roles
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Health investigator Mackenzie Bray smiles and chuckles as she chats by phone with a retired Utah man who just tested positive for the coronavirus.
She’s trying to keep the mood light because she needs to find out where he’s been and who he’s been around for the past seven days. She gently peppers him with questions, including where he and his wife stopped to buy flowers on a visit to a cemetery. She encourages him to go through his bank statement to see if it reminds him of any store visits he made.

OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) – An Oklahoma elementary graduation upset a neighbor who claimed the celebration was too loud and the noise needed to stop.
The last day of class at Santa Fe South Spero Elementary School in south Oklahoma City looked different this May. The school’s administration organized a drive-by summer send-off party for nearly 500 students.
“It said shut the [expletive] up,” said Albert, who placed the sign in his front yard where everyone could see.
FROM HERE
Shit, I never even heard of an elementary school graduation up until a few years ago. When I was a kid there was no fanfare, no feel-good celebrations, no snowflake ceremonies, we just moved up from 6th to 7th grade. The only difference was we went from beating 5th grader's asses to having our asses beat by 8th graders.
