Commentary: ‘No Evidence’ That Gun Buyback Programs Reduce Gun Violence, New Economic Study Finds

Shortly before Christmas in 2018, a woman named Darlene voluntarily turned in a 9mm pistol to the Baltimore Police Department. It was just one of about 500 firearms the department collected that day as part of the city’s gun buyback program, which paid citizens somewhere between $25 and $500 in exchange for their firearms and high-capacity magazines.

Darlene, however, had a confession. She was turning in her 9mm, she told a local news reporter, so she could “upgrade to a better weapon.”

  1. “upgrade to a better weapon.”.....Ya, I know. There is that continual discussion on whether a 9 is better then a 45 or vice versa. My thought is; doesn't matter what size you have if you are getting attacked. ANYTHING that goes pew, pew is better then nothing.
And save your words about which caliber is better. All I hear when folks do that is; Jimmy Rambo sitting on a stool at the local gun store counter waxing eloquently on the virtues of HIS fav weapon. He thinks he is imparting wisdom to the masses when actually he sounds like a wanna be that needs attention.
And yes the coffee hasn't kicked in yet! Sorry

    1. Yep. The day I see someone agree to get shot in the chest by a .22 or a .410 shotgun is the day I will reconsider the potential effectiveness of those calibers. They might not be *ideal*, but they ain't exactly useless.

  2. I would have kept the he 9mm (unless it was one of those quality Hi Points or completely worn out), and gotten a better one too.

  3. Nothing is proved until a study is done. Common sense be damned.

  4. Semi-local police dept had a gun buy back. I had inherited 2 Bryco 380 automatics. I couldn't get either one to fire a complete magazine without jamming. An armorer buddy of mine worked with them and he had the same results. I got a $100 Visa gift card for each of them.

I see gun buy backs as a way to get rid of unreliable crappy guns that could get you killed.

  5. Untrue. Spending taxpayer money ALWAYS solves problems.
    What problems?
The fact that in order to ask for more money you first have to spend what you have.
(You're never going to get more when you have some left)
