ALACHUA COUNTY, Fla. – Two Florida children were pulled over on Thursday after taking their mother’s car out for a joyride, according to the Alachua County Sheriff.
Deputies said that around 3:50 a.m., they found the car driving on I-75 in the city of Alachua. A release from the sheriff’s office says that the car had been reported stolen out of North Port, which caused deputies to pull it over.
I remember in the 60s as a pre-teen 'stealing' my mom's car for a joyride when they were out to some social function without us kids. I got my ass tore up when found out because my dad's reasoning was if I was caught by the police either he or I would be going to jail. If he told the police I stole the car, I would go to jail for GTA. The only other choice was I did not steal the car, meaning he allowed it, he would be jailed for child endangerment. Now I see there IS a third option. It seems that since no real harm was done, they let the kids go. Can I apply that logic if I am caught DUI as long as I did not hurt anyone or any property?
There’s something fishy about this. It’s a good three hour drive from North Port to Alachua. I’m struggling to imagine a 10 year old driving 3 hours on any interstate, much less a stretch of I-75 that includes constant traffic, construction and some pretty bad drivers. I’m not buying it, unless somebody invested some serious time and effort into teaching this kid to drive.
