In our modern age of camera-equipped cellphones and laptops, ubiquitous social media websites, and constant GPS tracking that everyone seems to use to go anywhere, you are not paranoid if you worry that Big Brother—the government—along with companies like Google and Facebook, are recording your every move. If the allegations made by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton are true, you can add automobile insurance companies and a host of third-party app developers to that list.
I have State Farm. I called to ask if I had enough coverage a year or so ago and the woman I dealt with wanted to know if I wanted to sign up for their driver monitoring program. They were offering a small discount as an inducement. My response was why would I want my insurance co to know every time I exceeded the speed limit and where I going every time I'm on the road. I'm driving an old model vehicle that doesn't broadcast the vehicle ID as it's out and about. It's probably the last vehicle I'll own.

ReplyDeleteJust thinking. I drive a service vehicle along with other servicemen. Insurance will monitor the vehicle, my phone, the business phone along with other service men in the truck. I'll bet everyone will lose.

ReplyDeleteI doubt that this practice is limited to Allstate, and I’ve never been insured by them, but I’ve never heard anything good about Allstate. They’re all crooks in any event.
ReplyDeleteI have Allstate and use that app. Nice to get a refund every 6 months. Have them for my homeowners insurance as well. Had burst pipes a couple of years ago. They worked with the contractor I hired, settled quickly and to the penny.

ReplyDeleteI'm kinda paranoid. Running Graphene on my Pixel and don't have too many apps installed. My provider knows where I am (and is no doubt selling that data) but Google can fuck off.
