A man in Wichita, Kansas has been arrested for stealing a historic cannon from the Spanish-American War, in order to settle a debt with a drug dealer who was threatening him.
The bronze cannon was cast in 1794 for Charles IV, king of Spain. It was cast as a smoothbore but later rifled in the hexagonal Whitworth style. This gave it more range and accuracy and kept it useable in the early modern age. It was supposedly captured on San Juan hill during the Spanish-American War, but I have my doubts as the Spanish redoubt there was a wooden blockhouse more given to lighter field artillery; it’s more likely that the cannon came from a stone fortress, like El Morro in San Juan. A sister cannon captured at the same time, is on display in Bridgeport CT mounted on it’s original cast bronze carriage.
