Rabies from squirrels and other small rodents is extremely rare and they have never been known to transmit rabies to humans from a bite. One site says they're not a vector since if they survive the bite from whatever it was that was rabid (unlikely by itself) their small bodies can't survive the virus long enough to transmit. Bats, skunks, racoons and foxes on the other hand...
I worked with a guy who's uncle raised coon dogs and he told a story about him trapping cats for several days to train some of his young dogs to chase. He drove out into the middle of a field and turned the dogs out then dumped the cats out of a gunny sack. "That's where I made my mistake" he said "I was the tallest thing in the field."
