The chief shut down the engines, both to conserve fuel and, more importantly, to avoid the sound signature.
Everyone on the Patrol Boat, River (PBR) felt as relaxed as they could under the circumstances, which was to say not even slightly. To be stationary on a river in dangerous territory is to cede the advantage to the enemy, even with the PBR tucked into and under the foliage of the bank. They were up the Nung River, into Cambodia, and damn near everything on the other side of the green wanted to kill them.

First patrol, scared as shit. A lil ol snake came outta the rice paddy and crossed the dike right in front of me and swam away. Next thing I knew several shots right behind me. I dove for the deck. I looked up and a soldier was walking toward me with a snake on his barrel. He put it in my face and said, Ya know what this is? Garter snake? He said, it's a Bamboo Viper. Welcome to Viet Nam Boot.
