Save ya a couple bucks, get your dog to growl at you again. Snatch him by the neck and force him on his back. Hold him on his back until he stops fighting it. then hold him there a little more. Bingo, he still has his balls, you still have no vet bills, and he's put in his place

Yeah, that's pretty much exactly what happened. We were rassling on the floor when it happened and I did just what you said out of instinct. The only difference was I got right in his face and kept snarling. He calmed down after a couple of minutes (and I'm serious, it was a couple of minutes), then I kept him down for a few more.
He ran to a corner and stayed there.
It's all good now.
