.gov just sold the last spare barrels for the main guns. They've been sitting in the desert for years. They have to be demilled(cut) to leave the property. The machinery to make new ones no longer exists.
The Iowa is now residing in San Pedro, Ca after being towed down from the Suisun Bay "Ghost Fleet". I'm a plankowner for the Pacific Battleship Center, and one of the Directors for the Battleship Iowa Amateur Radio Association. I've been on her numerous times, and she sure needs a ton of work. Much of the teak planking is decayed beyond restoration, but cannot be replaced with the same type of teak, as it's now an "Endangered Species", so I'm not sure what they're going to replace it with. If you ever get down to SoCal, be sure to stop in and she her!
When my Uncle Jim came out of Chosin during the Korean "police action" he saw a ChiCom division reduced to red mist by a time-on-target salvo from an Iowa class BB. The naval forward observer was surrounded by a platoon of Marines. Marines LOVE Navy FOs.
