This is proof enough for me that those coyotes on the east coast (Eric's from Georgia) have been breeding with wolves - I've never seen a coyote with that variation of colors in it's coat.
Could be part dog. I've seen coyotes here in Utah that were almost all black, a color not found in them in nature. When I was a kid in Las Vegas we had a fox terrier bitch that had a litter of coyotes; they looked like coyotes, but had odd coloring.

I don't know much about coyotes, but couldn't the color difference also be from breeding with dogs? german shepards have similar coat colors.
