TAMPA, Fla. – An Indiana man faces up to five years in federal prison for mailing a dead rat to his ex-wife’s Florida home, along with other threats and harassment over several years.
According to the United State’s Attorney’s Office Middle District of Florida, Romney Christopher Ellis, 55, of Indianapolis, pleaded guilty to making threats and mailing a dead animal using the United States mail. He faces a maximum penalty of five years in federal prison.

One wonders if the USPS has an actual line in their regulations specifically prohibiting the use of the US Mail to send the bodies of dead animals ( and would that include insects etc. or preserved biologic specimens) or did they merely use some generic regulation such as "mailing of hazardous material or substances".
ReplyDeleteOnce upon a time, you COULD mail game animal you got while hunting, no packaging required - but that was a really long time ago.
ReplyDeleteAre they sure it was dead when he mailed it? He could always claim that it was a birthday present of a nice pet, and the USPS killed it in transit.
