Allison Logging - Coastal Logging in the early 20th Century

  1. When I was 13 years old, my father decided he and I would cut trees just west of the house for firewood. He and my mother rented a house on five acres in Northeast Texas. Daddy bought a two-man crosscut saw and two axes. He already had several files. I learned a lot about the best size trees for cutting down and splitting, how to use an ax in trimming limbs for cutting and how to split logs with an ax. I also learned that a well-sharpened crosscut saw cuts through a tree with less effort than I thought. And as much as I appreciated the crosscut saw, I appreciated even more the gasoline powered chain saw Daddy came home with one day.

  2. $2.50 a day! And then ripped off for $1.25 of that for room and board. I can certainly see why unions came into being. Can you imagine laboring like that for $7.50 per week?

  3. Hey SgtBob I know what you mean about the chain saw. My dad bought a "Silver King" with an extra long bar. When it was getting down to it the thing made a narly growl...cut through huge trees with little effort, although the thing was damn heavy.
