My not-so-new laptop has a small pinhole just to the right of the webcam (which has a small square of electrical tape over it). Makes me wonder if there's a second webcam so the NSA, Microsoft, China and Google can still spy on you when you cover the 'real' webcam.
Yeah, while it's nice to see manufacturers responding to consumer demands, black electrical tape has been my savior for about the last 10 years. Even blends in with the plastic case material (better than duct tape).
Black electrical tape for mine. Placed there on the day I bought my laptop and brought it home. It has never come off. Same for the mics, they may hear some garbled speech but nothing clear unless they are more mics I don't know about. Friggen .Gov and .Microsoft voyeurs and perverts.
I knew my sons had become adults when they returned home from the university where they had taken a computer security course together and placed black electrical tape on all the computer webcams in the house, then wiped and deleted their old MySpace accounts and about 80% of their Facebook accounts. This was about 10 years ago. Today one travels the world as a highly compensated computer security "gun-for-hire".

DeleteDamn. You just blew a beautiful conspiracy theory to smithereens. Thanks a lot.
DeleteThat's the first thing I did to my laptop was cover the camera.

ReplyDeletePiece of yellow post-it. Never thought about it until about 10 years ago when the red light blinked on a previous computer.
ReplyDeleteI use one of those little stick-on googly eyes.
ReplyDeleteForgot mine had one. If you guys have been watching me jack off let me know your favorite episode.
ReplyDeleteBlack electrical tape over the camera and mics. Barely noticeable. Most IT security guys give a thumbs up.
