A very nice Jewfish, protected species. AKA by the politically correct as a Goliath Grouper. Somewhat common in the Florida keys. They get much larger than that one.
There used to be a small porpoise show in the 50's and 60's by the old John's Pass Bridge in Florida, on the Madeira Beach side, called "Patty the Porpoise" and they had a couple of Jewfish, a 400 pounder and a 500 pounder, in a tank with viewing windows just inside the entrance....they also had some thresher sharks and various other fish, and of course, Patty....life was simpler then....the Jewfish didn't seem to mind, and appeared very well fed....
My father-in-law reportedly caught an estimated 50-pound catfish on the Sulphur River in Northeast Texas. He did not have access to a weight, but the picture he took weighed 5 pounds.
