My Dads War, now this might sound strange to some Folks. But that war really set my Dad onto a really good and Honorable life.
Because after being in the Pusan Perimeter and then going all the way up to The Yalu. Which then thanks to the GI Bill. Got him to earn a Bachelors and somehow a Masters in Chemistry. Which led to a really good and solid life in the Middle Class. So I can say, that War was a great one in my mind.
My late uncle Jack served a combat tour in Korea and 2 tours in Viet Nam doing artillery. Like most combat vets he didn't talk about it much. He did tell me one time that it was so cold in Korea that if they didn't dig out under the recoil legs (not sure what you call them) and pad under them with sandbags that the hard frozen ground would break them off when they fired which would leave guys out in the field waiting for fire support while they replaced them. I only bring it up because you can almost see that in this picture. He had a bronze star with two oak leaf clusters and didn't have to prove himself to anyone but he said Korea scared him and Nam didn't. I myself spent some time in the 90's over there working with the ROK Navy on an Anti Submarine Warfare project and I can tell you that there are a lot of people in the ROK who appreciate the American GI's.
Spent a year there, '65 ~ '66, USAF, Osan Air base. Wonderful hard working people. A hard land that has since then proved the value of freedom and capitalism.
My Dad and my uncle both served there....My Dad was on a ship off the coast, a destroyer....I remember watching his ship return sitting on a cannon at the battery in Charleston S.C....I was 2 at the time, but I remember it clear as crystal....him and Mom didn't stay together, so I never got to hear about it from him....I did hear some from my uncle, though....it was a tough war, I might even say much tougher than Nam....you have to figure it only lasted a third of the time in Nam and killed just as many Americans....it was a different time....nobody protested the war....victory was expected, and the troops were honored on their return....if Truman had supported MacArthur, the outcome might've been different, for the Korean people, as well as our relationship with China today....the other side of the argument, was it any of our business to interfere in a civil war?.....that question remained unanswered in Viet Nam....looking at our country today, the legacy of our forefathers, and the price they paid to build the greatest hope for the common man that ever existed in the history of the world, may not last too much longer....wtf are people thinking wanting a socialist country?....nancy peeloosely, the four idiot women led by AOC, and fuck chuck schumer need to stfu or die, their choice....I'm old, and cranky....what do I know....
