During the last month and a half or so of the 2016 presidential election, meta-arguments about how Donald Trump would respond to his own (inevitable in the estimation of most observers) defeat became more important than any of the apparent issues in the campaign. Would he accept the results? What this question was supposed to mean — accept how? psychologically? — was far less important than the response it was meant to elicit, which is to say, a negative answer that would in turn become the pretext for thousands of fear-mongering articles like this one.

20 years ago, hell 4 years ago, I would have said that the right will grumble but would accept losing an election. Today after a few years of “ in your face” being called everything but a decent person and everything valued or believed being pissed on, I’m not sure the right will go quietly into the night.

ReplyDeleteIf we have a mail in vote the dems will engage in large scale fraud. That leaves Trump with 2 options either accept it in which case they get the WH... or he contests it and the dems claim he's straling an election and they get the civil war they want.
