Readers have no doubt encountered a severe ammunition shortage, affecting no only local supplies but online supplies as well. There are some good explanations for this, some of which I didn’t suspect. MORE
I’m worried. In WWII, American industry was able to make about six time the ammunition that we were able to shoot. Now, with no real war going on, the stores seem to be out of many calibers, and the prices of what they have are are too high. The ammo suppliers should be able to keep up with demand with a relatively flat demand-supply price curve.
I've never had a problem finding all the ammo that I need. I just look in the garage. No component shortage either. I've always overstocked ammo and components for everything that I shoot whenever I could get a good price over the years. I still have thousands of primers that I bought years ago when they were $.01 each. I even load .380 ACP for my PPK. I don't care what anyone says about that round. If it's good enough for James Bond it's good enough for me. At least for my pillow gun...........
I have no affiliation with this company whatsoever. I have purchased from them in the past. Sometimes shipping is slow, due to order volume, as they've posted on their home page. People in the Northeast get their merch one day after shipment. They ship via UPS. I don't think they ship to MA or CA. Digging around on their home page, you'll find a list of proscribed states.
I haven't been seeing a shortage of .40 S&W or .308 Win, but there have been shortages of 9mm, .223 and 5.56mm up here in New Hampshire. According to the folks at the gun stores I frequent it hasn't been due to heavy purchases of ammo and new guns so much as ordered ammo has been short and shipments haven't been as frequent.
I've been to the three local gun shops plus Academy Sports over the last week. Two of the gun shops are almost out of popular handgun calibers. Academy didn't have any. The remaining, really large gun shop, had lots of almost any caliber. I made a crack to the clerk that they must know somebody. He said something like, competition is fine, but we don't want the other guys to go out of business. I still don't know why.
There's ammo around here but the price gouging in incredible. This weekend at the range a guy was telling me that he went to buy some 9mm and what he found was Tula hardball for $55 for a box of 50.
People who didn't wait for EVERY SINGLE panic buy that comes along, find they have plenty of ammo at reasonable prices. ... and toilet paper, and meat, and bottled water, and medicines, and....
Last fall I decided to make one bulk purchase every other month. Consequently I'm sitting pretty good here. A big can of XM855 Green tip, A big can of .45 acp. A big can of 9mm, a sardine can of 7.62 x 39, a big can of 8mm Mauser, a big can of Garand ammo in enblocs, a big can of .38 special +P. And that's about about 20% more than I already had. No panicking this time around. and, as I mentioned to my dad, by the time I used half of that, I'd probably be dead. That said, I invested in a surplus Kevlar helmet, and a Level IIIA vest. With all this unrest escalating, my wife isn't complaining about these "frivolous" purchases, anymore.

ReplyDeleteDamn! Maybe it's time to unload a 1,000 round case of Speer Lawman 9mm 115gr FMJ...at $1/round, it is sure tempting.
DeleteWife says, hell no, I'm not selling her ammo!
