Yep! I was the captain of my ROTC rifle team at my HS in Memphis and graduated in 1980.. we had a rifle range in the basement of the school, as did most of the schools we competed against. There was a chemistry class on the floor above, and no misfire ever made it that far (as far as I know).
I've got pictures of like this of Mom. Captain of the Coed rifle team at the University of Detroit in the early 50's. She's 85 years old and you would not want her to be shooting at you even today. The high school my kids went to here in Texas currently has a trap and skeet team. My younger son has a very nice 03 Springfield and he always points out to people that the 03 is the rifle depicted on his Aggie ring.
At our high school you would be arrested if you brought a bright orange water pistol to school, but the marching band baton twirlers get to use mock rifles in the football half-time show. Nobody seems to notice the inconsistency. I've thought of pointing that out, but then, I'd rather let the kids have some fun.
I went to high school In Bucks County Pa. We not only had a rifle team, but had gun racks in our pick-ups. We could carry a knife with a blade less than 6". I was class of '82. We also had a smoking lav until 1980. My kids' high school had a rifle team and the youngest is about to start 4th year at college.

I was on the high school team, in 1971-72, 22short, 25 feet. Oh, that was Baltimore city HS.
ReplyDeleteIt wasn't THAT long ago. I would guess the 1970s is when most schools stopped it, along with their ROTC programs.
ReplyDeleteI used to be on my high school shooting team.
ReplyDeleteStill have them in the inner city...

The last high school I attended before being given the boot for good, Spencer HS in Columbus Georgia, had a shooting team, and that was in 1977.
ReplyDeleteGiven the boot, so you laced up your boots, went to boot and became a boot, got issued new boots, and found out what it's all aboot.
