I picked up a Western Pond Turtle that was in the middle of the road going into our ranch one day. I was driving a flatbed, so I put him on the floor of the cab so he wouldn't bail off the back. By the time I'd gotten to one of our ponds he was dug into the carpet under the seat and I could not get him out! I had to remove the entire seat to lift him forward and up to disengage his little claws. The rescue ended up being a little more involved than I figured it would be.
I went to pick one up out of the road after the flood waters ahad gone down; as son as my fingers came in contact with the edge of his shell, he did exactly what that one id - took off like a shot. Definitely not the slow-moving variety! CC
That kind of looked like a softball turtle. If it was, they have really long necks and will bite the shit out of you if you don't grab them by the rear of their shell. I'd say she got lucky.
Many people mistake terrapins for turtles. Terrapins can be ferocious and dangerous to fingers. In the South we call them Snapping Turtles... they're NOT turtles but they do SNAP!

ReplyDeleteMaybe the turtle wanted to be where it was
ReplyDeleteThe Tortoise and the Hare...Truly an ambiguous story!
ReplyDeleteIt was probably looking to dig a nest or already laid it's eggs.
ReplyDeleteI hate those big alligator snapping turtles in Texas. You can easily lose a finger.
