Yep, all that karate fu stuff is definitely over sold, a #125 girl with a couple years of training is not going to be able to take on a #200 guy with basic skills without a very lucky shot. I played aggressor for a rape prevention course the local PD was putting on a few years ago, I have decent grappling skills, the idea was to get away from me using the techniques they were taught, I was not supposed to make it easy. The highly trained female officer struggled with holding me off and needed assistance. Not saying it doesn't work but don't buy the hype. JD
Action always beats reaction. that is why there is a fine line in a defensive response between wait for it an launch on threat. Helps if the first punch is a round house rather than a jab.
I'm a second degree black belt and agree with some of the above statements. Karate skills are certainly useful but they don't make you invincible no matter how good you think you are.

ReplyDeleteMy high school wrestling coach, a golden glove amateur boxer in his day, always said "speed is the true measure of strength".

ReplyDeleteSpeed is great, as long as you have the ass or mass behind it to actually make it work.
ReplyDeleteFarted around with way too many female martial artistes who would wail on me full powered and I'd just keep plowing forward.
Favorite technique was to step on one of their feet with my full weight. Funny watching a 100lb blackbelt get pinned under a plodding 250+lb fat guy.
