Time to stock up, men

The pandemic has been a boom period for many brewers, as quarantined Americans’ demand for alcohol has spiked.

But for some, a wrinkle has emerged as they struggle to meet demand: the US is running out of cans.

Brewers like Molson Coors and Karl Strauss are reportedly shelving some of their slower moving and seasonal brands to keep can supply dedicated for their big sellers.

  1. If you like drinking good quality beer, make your own. Fuck them pandering beer companies.

    1. This. I cooked up 10 gallons of an IPA yesterday and plan to brew something else next weekend.

  2. And here I was thinking I was drinking faster than they could make the beer. Damn. My favorite is out of stock and has been for several months. My backup is also out. Shiner Bock is my fallback when nothing else is available. Right now I'm buying any Amber Ale and Pale Ale I can find from small breweries made here in Texas. Some are better than others, but dang.

At least we're not running into a bottle shortage. Right, Mr. Daniels? Cause if we are, you can shit-can that peanut butter flavored monstrosity I saw in the liquor store right now and go back to making regular Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey like God intended.

  3. Two points: Jack Daniels isn't made in Kentucky, it's distilled in Lynchburg, Tennessee.
    And it's sourmash, not bourbon.
But hey! at least you're drinking whiskey instead of gin.

    1. By God, I think you're right. I have 5 or 6 bottles of different stuff in the closet and didn't bother to check. My favorite is Knob Creek with Bulleit in second. I picked up some Jack Saturday out of nostalgia and drank quite a bit just messing around in the garage. Went down pretty good. I'll have to start reading labels again because apparently I forgot half of what I thought I knew.

    2. Try Four Roses sometime if you want a good bourbon. Alemaster turned me onto it and it's probably one of the better bourbons I've tried. It's also seriously underpriced for its quality.
Also, you might want to try Maker's Mark, although it's got a bit of a bite to it. 1792 is pretty good too.

    3. You should check out Cedar Ridge whiskey if you haven't It is an Iowa bourbon style and I put it on par with some mid-grade single malt scotches. Really smooth and excellent. I recommend the 86 proof. Unfortunately I quit drinking for weight and health reasons. It turns out that booze is not ketogenic.

My brother-in-law brews some awesome beers. My question about the article is - What kind of savage drinks beer from a can?

    4. Bourbon from Iowa is like Scotch from Canada. Just being ornery, I’ll have to give them all a taste.

  4. I gave up drinking beer out of cans back in the 60s when I discovered Rolling Rock nips.

  7. Michigan put a hold on returning bottles and cans for several months. They opened back up in June, but with limits on how many you could return per store per day. I still have about 5 or 6 big 30 gallon bags full of cans and bottles.
The deposit is 10 cents each, so I figure I have about 40$ or so of cans and bottles sitting in my storage unit.
Now, our wonderful Empress in Lansing has made it mandatory to wear a mask in any store, and to wear one outside where there are large numbers of people. I have no problem with wearing a mask at doctor's offices, or hospitals, but now Walmart is off my list, just because they declared all of their stores a must wear a mask zone. Sorry, but I refuse to both check out my own order and also wear a mask by decree, in order to shop in a place where I might save a few dollars over the local stores.

    1. Hell, if I could get 10 cents a 16 ounce beer can, I would have enough to buy a used truck. I have five 10 cubic foot boxes full and 27 30 gallon bags full. Maybe it's time for a price check.

  8. I noticed at Costco this AM that they did not have a single flat of soda in the store.

  9. Most aluminum for cans is made right down the road from Wirecutter, over in Russellville at Logan Aluminum. They are making coils as fast as they can right now.
