If you are passionate about homesteading and looking for the best way to get your feet wet, the chicken is the place to begin your journey. Chickens are absolutely foundational to homesteading, and this can be seen in nearly every aspect of what they can provide for your farm.
Homesteading is considered a mindset in today’s society, and if you are new to this way of life, chickens are happy to show you how it’s done. What was once a way of life that was non-negotiable, is now a favorable option for those looking to live a self-sufficient, efficient, and simplistic lifestyle. A lot of what chickens can offer to their owners has been lost with the introduction of factory farming. Unfortunately, the fact that chickens provide much more than just meat and eggs has been forgotten.
Let’s take a look at how your chickens lay the foundation for your homestead and help remind us that there is so much more to them than the chicken and the egg.

Chickens are so much fun, after a hard day grab a cold one or so then go kick back under a tree and watch them run around. It's better than most of the shit on tv these days.

Chickens rule!!
ReplyDeleteIf you have a rooster, pay attention to him when everything is quiet and the hens are feeding. Rooster will find something to eat and point it out to his hens. Don't believe this? I worked on a house for six weeks with a feral bunch of chickens roaming the area. There were over twenty hens and one wise older rooster. I'd lunch in my truck and watch the flock come around.
ReplyDeleteI got to have enough of their trust that if I would throw out bits of food Rooster would run over to see if it was edible. If it was he would act like he was pecking the ground for something and one or several hens would see him and run over and Rooster would back away and let hens have the morsel.
They will eat anything, pork, beef and chicken. They won't turn away from salads or fruit pieces. Anything besides the sand they live in is maybe a food and they will try it.
If you place 8 chickens in a 20 foot by 40 foot pen with high grass and weeds do you know how long it takes before it is cleared? I mean cleared down to bare dirt? One week. No shit. Do the hens give you an extra egg or two? NO, they don't. They expect more from you after clearing a jungle. Matter of fact they may cut back on eggs just to let you know how they feel about having to clear that jungle of food.
