JENSEN BEACH, Fla. – When a distraught senior citizen called 911 because her refrigerator broke, sheriff's deputies went to her home to explain that the phone number is reserved only for emergencies.

  1. When I worked for a national appliance repair chain, only Refrigerated Medicine constituted a need for true "Emergency Service." Anything else, we would schedule the next available appointment. If your food spoils from a broken fridge, food can be replaced. If your health is in danger from a broken air conditioner or other appliance, leave the building and don't wait for a repairman.
