NY attorney general seeks to dissolve NRA

Aug 6 (Reuters) - New York state's attorney general sued to dissolve the National Rifle Association on Thursday, alleging senior leaders of the non-profit group diverted millions of dollars for personal use and to buy the silence and loyalty of former employees.

The lawsuit announced by Attorney General Letitia James alleges NRA leaders paid for family trips to the Bahamas, private jets and expensive meals that contributed to a $64 million reduction in the NRA's balance sheet in three years, turning a surplus into a deficit.

James alleged in a statement that NRA leaders "used millions upon millions from NRA reserves for personal use," failing to comply with the NRA's own internal policies in addition to state and federal law.

  1. Let's see there politically correct affirmative action Latitia, when are you going to get around to investigating DeBlasio's wife and her $850,000,000 embezzlement problem?

  2. Can this lawsuit include ALL politicians who use public supplied $$$ for their junkets for their family and friends ? You know - to speed things right along ...

  3. Purely political theater. This is why Democrats/socialists/communists can never be trusted in positions of power. They will use those state powers to go after their political enemies. Every time.

    2. Gee...seems to me this ought to be handled by the board of directors instead of an attorney in another state. And, I dunno...maybe have some proof instead of prosecuting rumors.

And then there's the issue of standing.

    3. since when has the board of directors shown any interest in reigning in wayne's slush funds and bloated salary?

  4. I naturally hope the NRA wins this case for obvivious reasons.

Having said that, this sounds like the same reasons Ollie North resigned from the NRA. He may become witness #1 for the state.

  6. If the malfeasance asserted by the NY AG were true, then as with any crime the perpetrators should be punished. I don't care if it's the NRA, BLM or the Pope. Commit the crime, do the time. The onus is on the person who broke the law.

Dissolution of an organization with which the NY AG disagrees (hate is probably a better word)is not within her purview. She is not the owner of the First or Second Amendment and the NRA is the voice of both for ~4 million Americans.

What is in the Bill of Rights are rights we are ALL born with, whether we choose to embrace them or not. The the NY AG chooses to not embrace the Second Amendment is her choice. That she chooses to use her office to abuse the First Amendment *IS* OUR business.

  7. It's not the institution's fault...it's the leadership. Bar the current leadership from running anything and get some new blood in there that actually remember the purpose of the organization is not to line their own pockets.

  8. "The onus is on the person who broke the law."
Actually, the onus is on the prosecution (i.e., scumbag whatshername) to prove the accusations.
I hope the NRA takes this opportunity to cleanup the organization and get back to its' roots. They can start with relocating out of New York. Vote with your tax and other dollars . . .

  9. New York’s attorney general just confirmed what we all knew, and the rumors we’ve heard from board members being shoved out. Wayne LaPierre has been using our donations to fund his families extravagant life style and meanwhile the gun owners are not being represented. Lets hope the NRA can be saved. We need them desperately.

  10. Dummie liberals keep forgettin' that it is a "Rifle" association and when one side gets tired of being pushed..who has the rifles?
I do think LaPierre has lost his way and uses the NRA as a cash machine. Oliver North is too corrupt to lead the NRA and I would love to see Allen West as the big NRA dog.

  11. LaPierre must have a lot of embarrassing pictures of board members. I never understood how such a maroon rose to the top of the NRA. He'll not go quietly.

  12. I guess we can all expect multiple NRA fundraising letters showing up in our mailboxes.

  13. Regardless of what one feels about the NRA, understand this is a stalking horse (Soros?) led attack on the 2nd amendment. And understand too if a prog public servant can through litigation, gut one of the ten amendments in the Bill of Rights, then what is to keep another from targeting the other 9?

  14. "...NRA fundraising letters.."

No kidding. I still have a year or two on my membership, but the stories about the misuse of funds had me thinking I'd probably NOT renew.

NY state AG vs the Jerks running the NRA... hard to know who to root for.

  15. Fuck the NRA. Fuck Wayne. Fuck his henchmen. There hasn't been one piece of gun control legislation in the last 100 years that the NRA hasn't help draft, or hasn't had the NRA stamp of approval. https://amgreatness.com/2020/01/25/nra-where-have-you-gone/ https://time.com/4431356/nra-gun-control-history/ That last was prior to the LV massacre, and afterwards, even though the ATF admitted there was no proof that any bump stock was used, the NRA had no issue with them being classified as a MG. Got a binary trigger? Watch your ass. Don't say you weren't warned. The NRA will throw you under the bus as a sacrifice to save their own.

    1. now imagine an NRA free of the parasites who have sold us out time and again. one that stands and say not only "no more" but "let's roll that shit back"

one that treats other pro-gun groups as brothers, not rivals.

it can happen. the question is...are we going to make it happen?

  16. New York has jurisdiction over the NRA because it is registered as a non-profit corporation in New York State. The HQ is in Fairfax, VA, but the corporation is registered in New York.

There is almost 150 years of American history wrapped up with the NRA; the shooting matches, from youth teams to the national matches; coordination with the Civilian Marksmanship Program; and the true start of the whole association, safe firearm handling and marksmanship training. The NRA has done a lot of good in its history, political lobbying is fairly recent.

The NRA Foundation (a legally separate non-profit, also known as the Friends of the NRA) is the only national fundraiser I know that puts 50% of the money raised back into the state that raised it. That money goes directly to local ranges and shooting programs. The DC Atty General is now going after the NRA Foundation, because it 'loaned' money to the NRA.

Wayne LaPierre has not been a good or ethical leader. There are many Board members who assisted him or covered for him, and they should be held accountable, too. Lots of insiders have been trying to alert the general membership, for years. Senior staff tried to alert the Board, only to quit when they were ignored. Hundreds of thousands of volunteers and trainers have given untold hours of their life to uphold the values of the NRA, and LaPierre and his cronies have betrayed each and every one of us.

Do I hope LaPierre and his group get their dirty laundry exposed and that they're appropriately punished? Absolutely. I also hope that the NRA survives and regroups under honest, trustworthy leadership. I don't want to throw the baby out with the bathwater.

    1. It would be pretty ironic if the AG of the gun-hating state of NY was able to do something (ousting LaPierre and his cronies) that the membership has been trying to do for decades.
