I'm old. I remember a time when Iran actually was a modern place. Iran had one of the most beautiful and elegant queens I think I had ever seen, Empress Farah. Shah Reza desperately wanted to modernize Iran. He banned head wear and veils on women. He educated women and brought in academics from the around the world to provide their education. He brought in fashion for men and women from around the world. Everyone in his employ was impeccably dressed with the latest fashion from Europe. Women were encouraged to buy swimsuits and use them in public.
He understood that oil was the future of a modern middle east. My family is in the oil business. The Shah brought in western oil families and made them feel wanted, welcome, and safe. All children were considered sacred and he forbade the once common practice of sexual abuse of children among the ardent muslims. They hated him for it. The Shah was tough on those who opposed him. He underestimated the pull of religious freaks and their desire to rape children. The revolution happened and Iran returned to the stone age in just a few months. Khomeini assumed power and went back to raping children, abusing women, and making sure "Aloha Snackbar" was the word of the day. Was Shah Reza perfect? No, he could be brutal on the hard core religious nuts. Shah Reza lived extravagantly to help show the world that Iran was a world player. He tried to return the country to Persia again instead of "Iran".
I've often wondered how the world would be different is Shah Reza would have stayed in power. He loved Western civilization and Americans in particular. He was a man of vision, science, and culture. Shah Reza hated the commies, and their occupation of Iran after WW2 was always an issue.
I think King Abdullah of Jordan in many ways carries the flag for a modern and peaceful middle east. The world would be a better place for it.
The Shah had the bad luck to get sick during the Jimmy Carter years. We can thank Jimmy Carter for the last 40 years of muslim atrocity and mayhem. The Shah kept the ayatollahs in check, Carter refused to support the Shah and we end up with stabbings, bombings and dead Americans. F.U. Jimmy.
They had the start of a revolution during the Obama years. Huge crowds, widespread protests, people screaming bullshit in the streets, the whole nine yards. Obama didn't offer a bit of support and the mullahs had their goons start shooting up the crowds and that was that. Of all the crappy stuff Obama did in his eight years, that was one of the worst.
Obama figured that if the mullahs went down, there was no telling if the replacement would be a moslemic government; thus no help for the revolutionaries.
