Study: 68 Percent of Workers Earned More on Unemployment with $600 Weekly Enhancement

Some unemployed workers received nearly twice as much money through unemployment insurance (UI) payments authorized through the CARES Act than they earned when they were employed, a new study from the Foundation for Government Accountability (FGA) found.

In response to states shutting down economies over coronavirus fears, Congress passed several relief bills, including the Families First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA) and the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. These two bills expanded the UI benefit period, suspended work search requirements, included newly eligible individuals, and added a $600-per-week unemployment benefit enhancement through July 31.

    1. I was essential and got hit with a 12% pay cut april 1st and today a 5% cut on OT rates.

Cheap bastards, but the company is getting federal funds to subsidize wages.

  2. On the surface, this will seem to be more because taxes weren’t taken out (if I understand the system correctly)

  3. They also waived the requirement you must look for work if you are unemployed. I called job service looking for an employee last month and she basically said "good luck" and that I would have better luck once the $600 per week bonus ended.

  4. I am essential and we get nothing extra. The best part is I am essential wether or not the government thinks I am or not. It's nice to be needed.

  5. There's going to be a lot of shocked people next year when they find out they owe income tax on their 'free' money.

  6. My wife and I enjoyed the $600 a week ($1200 total), but in the end when an actual job opportunity presented itself, self respect was worth more.

  7. Forbes has a calculator that estimates the currentunemployment insurance by state. It varies widely but the previous insurance was $200 more.

  8. The girl that cuts my hair said she got a raise while the shop was closed. I myself was subject to a DoD letter saying my job was defense infrastructure critical and that I was to continue working (remotely). I had to acknowledge receipt. And then I got a debit card with a bunch of money on it that there was no way to give back. Total disconnect within the government.

    1. Raise? WTF is that? Lost my job in 2009, finally got a full time gig in 2014, but took $21k less. Haven’t had a raise since, while our executives have all received massive raises each year. I get frustrated at times but I have to remember that I have it better than most hourly workers.
