Del Puerto Canyon burns about every 5 years. It's all grass and scrub oak and once summer comes, it's nothing but tinder waiting for a spark.
When I was working for Safeway, the warehouse would fill up with smoke from the fires. At night, it was somewhat entertaining - we'd sit out on the back dock during break and watch the fire. One year it jumped the Delta Mendota canal and the 580 freeway and burned all the way down to our parking lot. Fucking badass, man.
We have a herd of dairy goats, so we know a lot of other goat people. Just heard about a well known goat breeder in the Vacaville area that just lost everything. Fire came up so fast that they just fled for their lives. Lost their house, barn, and nearly all their goats. Their website lists some beautiful animals, including last year's national champion. Decades of work, all gone overnight.
ReplyDeleteWe had a wildfire threaten our farm last year. We had time to evacuate our animals. The firefighters got it stopped at the last ridge before our property, thank God. But it is terrifying to see that wall of flame and smoke threatening to destroy everything you've worked for.
I can't bring myself to care.....
