They like the aerated wake of the boat. Whales, dolphins, porpoises, etc. all do this. I wonder how many horsepower it takes for those whales to keep up with the boat? They have to have a more hydrodynamic shape than the boat hull.
They're all well and good unless you're trying to catch fish. I was on a charter in Alaska once fishing for salmon. Two orcas showed up. Captain just had everyone pull in their lines since he knew the fish would scatter once they showed up. Too bad too since they probably showed up because there were lots of fish.
Very Cool
ReplyDeleteVery cool indeed. Boat going 20-25 knots and they have no trouble keeping up.

ReplyDeleteShould they be scared at all? Visions of an Orca flying up on land and grabbing a seal come to mind!
ReplyDeleteDolphins?
ReplyDeleteOrcas, aka, killer whales.
DeleteWow. One time sailing in the Great Barrier Reef we had dozens of dolphins racing with our boat but Orcas? Wow.
ReplyDeleteLeader of the Pack!
ReplyDeleteHow do they taste is the question.....
