When I was in grade school - a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away - our music teacher had a device along similar lines. It would hold five pieces of chalk in such a way as to allow her to draw staff lines on the chalkboard.
I have played music since 1970, and on occasion have seen music written on staffs drawn with this type of rake. I always just thought that the printer was messing up, and giving us skips and heavier lines in places. Who would have thought it was completely drawn by hand? It was mostly at places where I had to do sight reading in competitions or band festivals, in high school. But like you said, Now I Know.
