Fuck me, Newsom actually did a good thing

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a bill Friday afternoon to reform California's inmate firefighter program.

"Inmates who have stood on the frontlines, battling historic fires should not be denied the right to later become a professional firefighter," Gov. Newsom said on Twitter after signing the assembly bill into law.

I've known two ex-cons that did their time on fire crews, and they're the only two that I've known that went completely straight after they got out - not just returning to their life of crime and not getting arrested, but starting a new life.

  1. When I was a CDF fire fighter, I ran into 3 guys on inmate crew, at different fires, that i knew from Dos Palos.

Only followed up on one of them, but he did fine when he got out.

  2. The report makes it sound good, but the devil is in the details. Basically it allows the criminal to apply to change his plea and the judge to then wipe his conviction off the state records and allow the person to apply for jobs without having to disclose his criminal history. That includes jobs such as police officer or teacher. Some felonies are restricted from the program. https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billTextClient.xhtml?bill_id=201920200AB2147

    1. I've got news for you - nobody has to disclose their criminal history in California unless their applying for a job that requires them to be bonded.

  3. Yet if Trump had pushed for this, a large number of articles and protests would occur because...well because. The fact that you can see the good in this, even with someone you typically disagree with their policies, shows an intelligence and freedom of thought that so much of the country lacks.

  4. I'd like to someday read a story about an inmate that had served his time, went through this program to be rehired on a hand crew for CDF, eventually became a Fire Crew Foreman of an inmate crew and lived happily ever after. That would be going full circle.
