Reminds me of the time I went to visit my buddy David up in Mendocino County and he took me to dinner at a seafood place on the Noyo River harbor at Ft Bragg.
Looking at the menu I saw they had prawns which I love, but the menu said the dinner came with only 2 'large' prawns, so when the waitress came I told her to double down on the prawns. She told me they were large but I insisted.
Holy shit. She wasn't lying about them being large. While they weren't nearly as big as the one in the picture, they were huge. I couldn't finish them.
No one believes me when I say that down on the MS coast there were foot long shrimp. Shrimp, not prawns. That was several trips during the 1960s. I don't know if they are there anymore.

ReplyDeleteSaw some big honkers in Indonesia and Africa but then again they run the sewage right into their bays so yea, I took a hard pass.

ReplyDeleteMy ex-F.in.Law used to buy the tails from BIG lobsters ... really big ... north of 20# big. He did this back in the 60's when the lobster boats trolled the edge of the continental shelf. The bugs down there had been growing for decades. Can't say how old those bugs might have been, but it takes a typical north Atlantic lobster about 7 years to reach one pound. F.in.Law would cook these jumbo tails like a roast, then slice off chunks as if he were slicing from a loin of beef.
ReplyDeleteMy brother took a 12 lbs lobster in 20 feet of water this month in San Diego. In Hawaii, we used to take +15 lbs lobsters. I only say 'used to' because we don't live there anymore, not because they are fished out.

Farmed shrimp suck. Shrimp too large are tasteless. If you don't freeze shrimp right they become tasteless. Nothing better than fresh caught wild shrimp. Everything from there may be questionable
DeleteI've eaten at that seafood place in Noyo Harbor a few times. Loved their clam chowder and would road trip over from Clear Lake for it.
