  1. There was a famous legal case from the 1930’s where a contractor purchased a tape measure from Woolworth for $0.20. Unbeknownst to him the tape measure went 1 foot, two feet, three feet, four feet, four feet, 5 feet etc. (there were two four feet). He built a building in New York City one foot onto the adjoining property, and was forced to take it down. He sued Woolworth for the cost of rectifying the building and lost that part of the case. The court did however award him his $0.20 back for a defective tape measure. Next time buy a measuring instrument whose accuracy is certified to be traceable to the National Bureau of Standards (now National Institute of Standards and Technology), or at least compare it to a known accurate standard.

    1. When I was a young pup working for a contractor one of the morning rituals with our coffee was to pull out all the guys measuring tapes and compare it to the bosses tape. He would jigger the end on yours if it was even a 1/16th off. He wanted all of the tapes to be as accurate as his saying if the building was off, it was his fault. To this day I measure all my tapes to one measure if I am working with anybody on a project.

  5. A guy on the tool forum showed 14 wrenches, all marked 1/2" and NONE were the same size. Before 1927 there was no standardization

  7. #5 - If the cork is that dry, it's been sitting upright for a while, so the wine's probably gone to vinegar.

  8. At the window factory I work at we check out tapes everyday by taking 3 measurements. If it's off by more than a 32nd you get a new tape and check that one.

    2. You beat me to the concrete comment. If he gets it on his hands, then from his Hans to his eyes, he’s blind.

  10. One is for buying and the other is for selling.
The third is for a second opinion should any smart arse complain.
