Lisa thanks you, one and all

 .....for her Happy Birthday wishes.

She actually had a pretty miserable day yesterday. Her back went out again and she was in some serious pain, couldn't sit or lay comfortably and standing was out of the question. She was having to use a walker to take care of necessities.

She called LadyDoc who suggested coming in for a steroid shot but that was out of the question seeing as she couldn't make it from the house to the truck, much less dealing with the ride there and back, so LadyDoc called in some steroid prescriptions and suggested a TENS unit for therapy until she could get in for a shot. Naturally, the closest place that had a TENS unit in stock was in Portland, an 80 mile round trip. But I climbed my ass into the truck to get it.

The only times I saw her smiling and forgetting her pain was when she was reading the comments under her Birthday post, and for that, I thank you kind folks. You made her day a little easier.

  1. A belated Happy Birthday, Lisa...My wife just had spinal surgery in June, so she (and I) can empathize with what you're going through. Hope you're feeling better...

  2. Physical Therapist here.

Based on my experience, a 'back went out' is often triggered by something in the diet.

A reaction to food-borne pesticides, for example, can irritate the digestive system.
The nerves controlling digestion lead to-n-from the spine.
An irritated gut irritates the nerves controlling the gut; their irritation inflames the surrounding tissues.

    I expect a three-day recovery.
This three-day period is the time required for the irritating food to transition the gut via excretion.

During this time of irritation, I would avoid additional irritations such as coffee or salsa.
To help heal the tender gut tissues, I would also avoid pointed rough foods such as raw carrots and nuts (almonds, peanuts).

At-home testing for irritating foods is as simple as eliminating a suspect.
For example, if you suspect pistachio nuts, eliminate them for a few months, then gently eat a few.
    If the irritation returns...

    1. Her issue is degenerative disc disease and we've been dealing with it for years. We haven't been eating anything new lately either.
It all started last Friday when she bent over to put on her shoes and felt something give way. She was in pain all day Friday, Saturday she felt better, then Sunday it got real bad.

    2. Masterbating too much can do that to!
      Trust me.

    3. Might dangerous diagnosing without an MD behind your name. Maybe that’s why MDs don’t usually jump in and volunteer diagnostics with so little info from a brief internet blurb

  3. Sorry to learn about Miss Lisa's back. That's a real bitch.

I got a TENS unit a few years ago to help with an issue I was having. One of the best $50 purchases I've ever made. Hoping Miss Lisa has the same results.

    1. It seems to be helping. We're using it 3 times a day for 30 minutes at a time, and she's able to move around a little bit today without using her walker.

  4. Look for a cheap inversion machine on fakebook or craigslist. After years of back pain and no success with doctors she got a used inversion bench and it takes away the pain quickly . It is a device you hang upside down on and it lets your back straighten out and the little bumpers between the vertebrae fill back up with cushioning fluid . We paid $40 for ours on Craigslist. I even use it when my old tired back gets to bothering me some . Straightens the kinks right out .

    1. I had a great chiropractor in kali but left 15 years ago. Since then I got an inversion table, which I use daily, and haven’t needed a chiropractor since. Highly recommend

  5. My sympathy and best wishes for You and Lisa. My wife also has pain issues. She has a nerve stimulator implanted in her back with a cell phone based controller. She wasn't sure that it provided any relief, but was in much more pain when she had to mail the controller off to be updated. I hope the TENS unit helps as much.

  9. Kenny. Do this. Check around with your local chiropractors. I don't believe they're much use but here's where they may be able to help. See if you can find one with a "therapeutic laser". Sometimes called a low power laser. We use one at my clinic for dogs with slipped discs, sciatica etc. and it works great. I analogize it to acupuncture (Which I do believe in) but I didn't have to learn all that Chink stuff you have to know to do needles and it's less invasive and more comfortable. Win win. It works in most patients, humans included. I do family, staff, and every now and again, clients I know well and I'd say 95 times out of a hundred it helps reduce pain dramatically.

    1. Not sure we have any local chiropractors, Ray, but I'll check.

    2. I have a good friend that's a chiropractor, he uses that laser acupuncture along with spinal decompression. Man that stuff is wonderful. He won't do manipulations or decompression on your back without an X-Ray or a MRI depending on your situation though. Check into it Kenny, it's definitely worth your time.

  13. I happen to own a collection of busted disks. When i get a flare up i pour a pound of dry white rice in a 100% cotton tube sock and fie off the end. Microwave it for about 90 seconds, wrzp it in a thick towel and have the Mrs lie on her back with the sock under the offended area. The rice naturally absorbs moisture crom the air and this gives you a moist heat that helps loosen the muscles. Be careful with the heafinv process as micdowaves vary. You can gef sczlded if you are ot careful. This gives me enough short term relief to move around to tend the necessaries without screaming.

    Best of luck to her.

  14. Happpy birfday, Miss Lisa!

  15. Glad I helped even if it was a small amount. I have a T.E.N.S. unit I picked up after shoulder surgery and it really helps with sore muscles. Amazon used to have the best prices on the replacement pads and I bought a ton of them a few years back and they still work to this day. Sometimes cold packs helps which seems just backwards but it has worked for me and an Aunt of mine.
    Good luck,
    Get well soon,

  16. Having a bad back myself (Spinal Compression), I can really understand the hell she is in. It is just a good thing that she has a good man around. Anyways a belated Happy Birthday and a sincere wish that a Medical Break through happens soon about Back Problems!

  17. Sorry to hear that. I know all too well about how back pain tortures and how all too often it's misdiagnosed.
Run the usual tests, see the obvious anomaly and say "there's your problem".
In short, correlation but not proven causality.
From my considerable experience, and I'm not passing a medical judgement here as I don't have the facts & history to do it, but I would suggest you find a good NMT (Neuro muscular therapy) practioner in your area (there appears to be a few in TN) and pop Lisa in. Physiotherapists and chiros may have that expertise too.
Disc damage is common but...pain attributed to it can often be traced to unresolved soft tissue injury in the past.
As for inversion tables - yes they can assist but primarily benefit the thoracic and cervical spine.
Spinal flexibility exercises with a fitball can be very very effective but of course it can be problematic when you're in pain so best done when you're not.
Lots of info to disseminate on the topic. Let me know if you want more.

  19. Ditton on TENS helping. It's helped tight muscles relax, and a shoulder issue that lasted 4 months turn loose enough to work out.

Good on ya man for taking care of the lady. Wouldn't expect anything less.

Get better Missus L. I'm pulling for you.
