WHAT? ANTISEPTIC MOUTHWASHES KILL GERMS???!!! WHO KNEW???

A recent study published in the Journal of Medical Virology finds some mouthwashes and nasal rinses could help protect against the spread of coronaviruses.

Researchers from the Pennsylvania State College of Medicine tested several mouthwash and nasal rinse products on infectious stocks of human coronaviruses to determine their affect on the viruses.

  2. No need to point out the incredibly obvious when the merely obvious will suffice.

  3. Didn't read it, as I avoid stoopid. But the phrase "infectious stocks" made my ears perk up...

  4. Listerene was developed as a hospital disinfectant, more gentle than the then-currently used Carbolic Acid. It was named for Joseph Lister, a British physician who pioneered hospital sanitation and disinfection.

  5. In the interest of transparency; I have sinusitis. Lifelong postnasal drip. Hate it. I even had nasal surgery to attempt to make things better. One of the after surgery treatments is to use the Neti Pot. I use the squeeze bottle; it's easier to use. The routine I use is, one rinse with water and a saline/bicarb mix. You can get this product at any pharmacy. You can make your own also; 1/4 tsp of salt and 1/4 tsp of baking soda. Then a second rinse with water, the salt/bicarb mixture, a couple of drops of Baby Shampoo and my steroid.
Wowzaa!!! What a difference that makes! Better flushing and just generally a better all around sustained effect throughout the day.
The flushing action takes some getting used to.....but, hey, if it works, I'm not complaining.
I am not a doctor and I can't prescribe; just telling you what MY routine is....different folks; different mileage.

    1. I've had a lifelong problem with sinus congestion and infections until a friend told me about using a neti pot. I tried it (I use a squeeze bottle) and what a difference it has made in my life. I haven't had any problems since I started rinsing once a week several years ago. I never thought of putting baby shampoo in it. I'll have to give it a try.

    2. I *am* a doctor, and I can vouch that Neti pot works wonders for some people. (This is personal anecdotes, not anything I learned professionally. If they tried to teach us that at one point I definitely wasn't paying attention at the time.) For those who are curious but can't find a Neti pot, you can just mix up some solution and, blocking the opposite nostril, snort it out of your cupped hand over the sink.

@Steve (OP). How much water to that 1/4 tsp each of salt and bicarb?

    3. Move to Monterrey Bay. Go out to the point when the surf is crazy wild and crashing on the rocks. Breath the salt air for half an hour. I did just that, went home, tasted traces of salt for the next six months and did not have a sinus infection for those same six months.

  6. Whoda thunk that a product containing 10% alcohol by volume could do germs in?

It's like a revelation from on high or something!

  7. I buy Arm and Hammer Saline nasal spray and use it generously after I've gone to the store or other place with a number of people in close proximity. Don't know how effective it is, but so far so good.
