SILVER SPRING, Md. (NewsNation Now) — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has recalled pet food products which led to at least 28 deaths and eight illnesses in dogs that ate the recalled product.
The offender is Sunshine Mills and brands it owns. The article is fairly useless in transmitting that information, probably due to legal.
This is why I feed my pupper from the meat isle, or what ever I happen to be eating at the time. He used to get blue buffalo to snack on but they are dumped too. Can't trust any kibble brand, no oversight, no accountability, and garbage ingredients all around. I suppose one could look at brands that have never had a recall before but it's still dubious since they probably don't have the numbers to get noticed.
Dogs can't digest corn and have a hard time with grains, it's just useless filler. I wouldn't put it passed dogfood manufactures to use grain that has been rained on, from the bottom of the pile, rat infested, etc, to save a few pennies.
Sunshine mills claim to "own and operate multiple plants within the U.S.A" that "multiple plants" doesn't give me a lot of confidence that it's ALL of their plants, nor does it mention where the ingredients are sourced. Their Evolve brand says it's grain free and filler free, right on the package... I don't believe that, if toxins from a grain mold are found inside. The only possible way to get the aflatoxin would be through low quality meat that was fed compromised grains.
About 20 years ago we got our last dog-he was an 8 week old pup who was the pick of the litter. Energetic little guy, for sure. He was replacing a 10 year old who sadly had to be put down because of stomach tumors, likely from shitty dry dog food from a national brand-and yeah, it was not expensive dog food. So for the pup I decided to pull out all the stops and make sure he got nothing but healthy food, regardless the cost. Did lots of research and settled on Nutra brands, a family of products developed by a small company in California that seemed to be telling the good story about their dedication to animal health through nutrition with 'responsibly manufactured' food. They built a multi-million dollar factory in Fremont, Nebraska; it was centrally located and most importantly close to quality ingredients-mostly chicken, turkey, some beef, and no grain products. The ingredient label read even better than a Thanksgiving dinner menu. I was paying ~$65 for a 35# bag and was okay with that-hey, it was for my little buddy, right?
From the git-go (sometime in the late '90s) the company had told all their partners-distributors, retail stores, employees, even customers: "We are in it for the long haul-we will stay independent and provide the best quality pet food for caring families. Long story short: the fuckers sold out to Proctor & Gamble.
Here is a link describing the downward spiral of Natura product quality, thanks to P&G. Seems like our dogs and cats got sold out by the Big Lie-and I doubt that's the first time this has happened in pet food:
