How Effective is Pistol Ammo at 100 Yards?

It's time for another edition of Stuff John and Chris Wanna Know! This time, we're looking at what pistol ammo does at 100 yards. Calibers tested were 9mm, .40 S&W, .45 ACP, and .357 Sig. We compared bullet velocity at the muzzle and 100 yards and also fired some rounds into ballistic gelatin. The results were a bit unexpected (especially for .357 Sig...).

  1. The question which I have is:
"How does the 9 mm do at 100 yards
when shot out of a 9 mm carbine ?
Such as an FX-9 from Freedom Arms.
    16" barrel

  3. Check out the 7.5 FK from Brno. It pushes a 95 gr bullet at 2,000 fpm out of a 6” barrel.
You generally don’t gain as much when you shoot pistol rounds out of a longer barrel because the powder used in say a 9mm is optimized for the short pistol barrel. You tend to lose more velocity with rifle rounds out of pistol barrels. With all of the AR pistol caliber carbines popularity I’m sure there are some recipes out there that use a slower powder optimized for a 14 or 16” barrel.

    1. 9x25 Dillon is a better non-standard caliber for folks to consider due to easy reloading data & component availability... also factory ammo is also more easily available via Underwood (https://www.underwoodammo.com/collections/handgun-ammo/products/9x25mm-dillon-90-grain-xtreme-defender). Just about any 10mm semiautomatic pistol can be readily converted to 9x25 Dillon with little cost or effort (most require only a barrel change), netting you a more functional & cheaper sidearm option than the FK Brno.

  4. Pretty darn accurate out of my kel-tec sub-2000 foldable 16" carbine. Rule #1 always bring a rifle to a pistol fight.

  6. This is a moot point as there are very few shooters that can hit a ten ring at 100 yards with a pistol. I always ended a practice session with a full magazine at an 8 in plate at 100 yards, maybe 25%. I once witnessed Rob Leatham do this very casually. He drew and shot an 8" plate at 100 yards, as if it were nothing. Pistol rounds at 100 yards would only be for suppression.

    1. Had a friend who was on a police department, and I went with him to their range once.
      Shooting a .357 revolver with both .357 & .38 rounds, using 158(?) grain slugs.
I could consistently hit center of chest at 100 yards with both. The .38 just dropped about a foot more at that range.
Fun side note - the local prison had .22 caliber machine guns with laser sights, and their armorer was there putting them through the paces, and we got to watch.

  7. I know for a fact that .40 will go clean through a man at 25 yards and into the second room of a wood frame house after is bounces off the street; after going through a dude. I'm sure it's going to suck at 100 still. Hell a .22 can go through a picnic ham at 300 with 2 denim layers.

Happy New Year! See ya in 2021.

  8. Same could be said for the 45 acp out of a mechtech carbine upper or 1894c and 1894 (.357 & .44 mag respectively). You go guys, keep testing, thanks.

  9. I love shooting pistols and revolvers. I had Larry Kelly build me a Super Blackhawk Stalker with a 2 power Leopold back in the eighties and took a nice buck with it at 90 yards. And I’ll still go to my grave saying this: “The only reason to have a handgun is to fight your way back to your rifle.” Eod1sg Ret

  10. My AR-9 pistol with the 11.5" barrel does a nice job at 100 yards. I shot my S&W Model 65 357 at gongs that were at 80 and 90 yards today. I am pretty sure the 45GAP and 10mm would do better.

  11. How effective is a .41 Remington Magnum Ruger Blackhawk with a 6 1/2" barrel at 100 yards?
Pretty damn effective, when you know what you're doing.

  13. back in ww2, the waffen ss used russian weapons as well as their own. most units converted the ppsh 41 to 9mm for german army use, the ss kept them at the 7.62 by 35
as it was a better round, farther range and just better than a 9mm.
