Oh shit oh dear

 Good morning everybody.

I'm experiencing some technical difficulties today (Tuesday - I'm pre-scheduling this post from the McDonald's parking lot) and won't be online until early Wednesday afternoon.

Basically what happened was my router went tits up Monday night. I called the service department at my phone company this morning and was told I have  choice of buying a router at Walmart or renting one from the telephone company.

Buying one for $150 or renting one at 2 bucks a month..... as tight as money is, that's pretty much a no brainer. Only thing is, it won't be ready for pickup until 10 this morning,

Please bear with me and I'll try to get some posts up this afternoon. Also, if you'd be so kind, please keep your emails to me and comments here down to a low roar so I don't have to play catch-up.

Now, if it breaks or gets obsoleted, it's mine..

  4. Ebay or Amazon might be a cheaper option.

  5. $150? That's an **expensive** router. Especially at wally world! Online you can usually buy one for MUCH MUCH less. Especially if you're willing to get one that's used.

Maybe rent for a month, and buy this one? https://www.ebay.com/itm/NETGEAR-R6200-Smart-WiFi-Router-AC1200-Dual-Band-Gigabit-B7/154222849403?epid=23028314369&hash=item23e865ed7b%3Ag%3A2fIAAOSwIwtfxv%7EP&LH_ItemCondition=1500%7C3000%7C2500

There's literally thousands of them. And even NEW it shouldn't be over $50 or so!

Unless you're talking about a DSL modem included type? Those are a little more expensive, but still shouldn't be more than $100. Cable modems are a little more expensive, I paid ~$80 for mine and had to get a router separately.

  7. I know this doesn't help but.......I was all prepared to sent you a cable modem router. I changed to fiber so I didn't need it any longer. I went to get it and when I did I realized I had shipped MY router to the cable provider along with their leased equipment. If by some miracle they send it back , I will forward it on to you. Sorry I'm an idiot!......Mike

  8. I probably have an old router or two around if you're interested. Maybe not the newest technology but they worked for me.

  10. I do computer stuff, and people have been asking me the "rent or buy" question about routers for 30 years.

    The answer is simple.

    1. If the router breaks, you get a new one free. If you buy one, you get to buy another one.

    2. If you have internet problems, the repair guy won't touch any router but their own. If it's a "foreign router", you get to pay time and charges for support, even if it's a cable problem.

    3. If your service provider gooses up internet speeds, you're stuck with the old speed.

Bottom line, rent the damn thing.

  11. Anonymous, thanks for validating a choice I made last march with Fucking X-Finity to rent (~$14/month) versus buy (~$225)
