Coronavirus hospitalizations are stabilizing in parts of California, but patients are still overwhelming hospitals in a large swath of the state, leading Gov. Gavin Newsom to warn Californians to brace for the effect of a “surge on top of a surge” from recent holiday travel.

ReplyDeleteWhat they're not admitting is: 1) The % of ICU beds that are occupied is usually within 15% of capacity, since this is how the hospital makes a profit. If it's lower than than they're in the red. And: 2) When the ICU is at 100% it's not really full...the hospital have "overflow" areas that can be converted to ICU usage giving them an additional 25%. We've not reached that point.
ReplyDeleteAnother thing I heard is some of the "shortage" is due to staffing as some folks are out sick, having to take care of their kids or other legitimate reasons.
