A longtime Alaska Zoo resident alpaca named Caesar was killed Saturday night or Sunday morning by a wild brown bear that broke into the alpaca’s enclosure.
The bear tunneled under the zoo’s perimeter fence and broke through the cedar split rail fence around the enclosure before killing Caesar, according to the zoo’s executive director, Pat Lampi.
Sadly they will have to find and kill that bear. Bears are quite smart, they learn fast. This bear has learned where to find food tht can't escape and which he can get too with little effort. The bear will decimate the zoo till stopped.
This is interesting The bear was not in Hibernation in January. Here in Montana we are having an open winter NO SNOW. I wonder if Alaska is having one as well. Bears should not be out in Mid-January. I would be extra cautious if I lived in Alaska this winter
In Texas they put donkeys out with the cattle to stomp the coyotes into coyote pancakes. Not sure what you would put with the Alpacas to keep the grizzly's away. I've found geography to be the best defense against bears. You'd be amazed how few bear or shark attacks we have up here on the North Texas prairie.
Nah, just put a bounty on the bears. In Texas there wouldn't be one bear left after two weeks. One of the specialty brewers could come out with their "Bear Brew" and sell $100,000 worth of beer to all the bear hunters
I loved that comment,"The other alpaca was found unharmed though wide-eyed and skittish"
ReplyDeleteNo shit Sherlock!
Bears name Brutus?
ReplyDeleteShould be Casca, since he was the first to attack.
DeleteDid Fuzzy Charlie kneecap Caesar first?
ReplyDeleteHe probably spit at him

He must have spit on the bear one too many times.

ReplyDeleteBeen a really odd winter here. Had -30 the first week of November and +30 last weekend in the Interior. It's usually reversed. Damn SUV's....

ReplyDeleteThere's a lesson there about depending on the government for food and shelter.
