My uncle wore long sleeve shirts for most of his life to cover the tattoo he got while on shore leave. He was proud of his service, but respectable people didn't get tattooed back then. Does it matter today? I knew a young lady who graduated cum laude a few years ago. She has a power cat tattooed on the side of her foot. She did quite well on several job interviews right up to the in person interview where she got dropped several times. She always dresses to the nines. She was telling me about it and I suggested she change to shoes that cover the tattoo. She got hired within a week.
I got one at 16, about 1965, by Sailor Barney in a traveling carnival. A panther head with a knife through it saying, Born to Lose. Real cute eh? I talked a lots of guys out of getting tattoos in the military. I was going to cover it up but damn that tattoo traveled a lot of mile with me to include Nam. It's just a part of me.
Dad had a blue blotch on his forearm, from the Philippines before WWII. As a kid, I asked him what it was. He said it was a monkey bite. I think he had it covered up with more blue ink to be socially acceptable.
Laser dermatology can remove most of it. It ain't perfect, it certainly ain't cheap, and stings worse than getting it in the first place. But if it interferes with your life, look into it.
