GIs, I swear...

An investigation into what sickened 11 soldiers who ingested an unauthorized substance shows they drank an industrial compound found in antifreeze believing it was alcohol following a 10-day field training exercise at Fort Bliss in Texas, U.S. Army officials said Friday.

  1. A bunch of convicts in Oklahoma went blind and some died back in the 70's from drinking the antifreeze used in tractor tires... Dad warned me about that stuff when I was a pup. I guess we aren't teaching kids chemistry anymore... I mean, Aqua Velva will still give you a buzz, right?

    1. STxAR, Remember ya gotta drain the Aqua Velva through slices of white bread before you sip it.

  2. Remember straining rubbing alcohol through a sock or bread one? Mixed it with orange juice. Did that in Camp Geiger.

    1. I thought it was Listerine. My understanding is that drinking rubbing alcohol will kill your ass most ricky-tick.

If I've got fruit juice, a little yeast, and some time, I'm set.

    2. Wood alcohol I know will kill you but apparently rubbing strained won't unless you drink large amounts. I saw a lot of GI drink it. Come to think of it all alcohol can kill you.

  4. Back in the 70's it was BYOB on field problems at Fort Carson regardless of length. Along with the controlled substance of your choice.

  5. My Dad was in the Marines during World War 2, and on one of the formerly-Japanese-held islands he was stationed on (I want to say Pelelieu) one of the Marines came up to the interpreter (Southern guy, Dad swore he spoke Japanese with a Southern accent) with a bottle, asking if it was saki. Turned out to be napalm. Talk about getting lit up....
