When you have a path raised nearly above the water on both sides, but you can't see all of it, remember: there's got to be somewhere where water can flow from one side to the other, even when it's down a little and nothing is flowing over the top. Unless you know of a bridge or culvert, most likely one of those low spots is VERY low.
