A 61-year-old Brooklyn nurse was crushed to death by a backhoe that knocked her over with its shovel and then ran her over in the East New York section of the borough on Friday.
Gruesome surveillance video released on Saturday shows Estelle Davis walking through the intersection of New Lots and Van Sinderen Avenue just after 2pm on Friday as she was headed to her nursing job nearby.
What a shame he contaminated the gene pool before getting his Darwin Award. You need to hurry up son, don’t forget to bring along the rest of the family.
Even without the phone it is doubtful she would have been able to react effectively, and shouldn't have to. A lot of people freeze when unexpected things happen.
Really surprised that there wasn't a moanback on the ground helping the operator with visibility in those tight spaces. Maybe one of those phantom mob positions that New York contractors enjoy paying for.
How about not walking into a backhoe? How about paying attention while crossing a street. How about paying attention when youre in a construction zone and heavy equipment is operating. I dont care if the pedestrian has the right of way. At some point the pedestrian has to have the common sence not to walk around oblivious to the world around them and expect everyone to get out of their way. No sympathy for her. She was in the wromg and the operator will pay for her incompitence.
"How about paying attention when youre in a construction zone and heavy equipment is operating."
How about someone operating heavy equipment in a construction zone accessible to the public take some basic safety precautions to protect the public? Anyone who has been on a backhoe for more than five seconds can tell you that you don't have 360 visibility.
I'm pretty sure the service contract contained funds for a safety supervisor, but some bean counter decided to skimp on that one. I would love to see the contract published. If it didn't have budget for that, whichever bean counter(s) approved it as the lowest bid over one that did is responsible.
Hard to tell but it does look like she turned her head to look for oncoming traffic. If so, she wasn't completely oblivious to ordinary risks.
I'm totally in favor of Darwin Awards where they're merited, but in this case it is clear criminal malfeasance on the part of a bean counter who put the equipment operator in that position. Whoever that bean counter is should be executed for premeditated homicide to encourage others like him. There's Darwin for you.
The press often doesn't address the difference between an RN, a Registered Nurse, an LVN, a licensed vocational nurse, and a CNA, a certified nursing assistant. There is a definite pecking order of education and training.
What a shame, just a few seconds of inattention. I'm sure you gods of awareness(above) have never never phuqued up, but lucked out. Compassion and empathy is being burned out of people by the Evil Phuquers. Don't be THAT ass hole.
ZERO situational awareness on her part. No personal responsibility. If you are stupid enough to walk around with your head down, buried to the ears in the internet, on the streets of any city this is what could happen. I feel bad for the backhoe operator although he is NOT blameless either. Why no ground guide??
Where is the safety observer? Not allowed to move heavy equipment with out one, and the rest of the crew. The union rep? Supervisor? Two shovel guys? I suspect she would have lived with only running into the back hoe, The backing over her part is probably what did her in. Daryl
I understand that in Germany, some places have begun to install lighted "Walk/Don't Walk" signs in the sidewalk concrete at intersections. Too many idiots were stepping out into traffic while texting.
Yesterday I seen a 40ish AZDOT worker walk across Hwy 95 without looking up from his phone. He is old enough to know better. As a AZDOT worker he certainly would know how the yellows are short on the traffic lights and trucks often blow through the intersection.
Terrible just terrible,I think my dad went the same way.

ReplyDeleteGuy does need to put the trash in the proper bin not leaving it on the street to add to the stench of the city.

wonder if it had back-up bell?
ReplyDeleteI was thinking the same thing.
DeleteWait, was that a backhoe or a blackhoe?
