POLK COUNTY, Fla. – Three former Polk County deputies face charges after money went missing from an arrest in December, according to the sheriff’s office.
John Raczynski, Jamal Lawson and Garrett Cook were all arrested Friday, according to a news release, and each resigned upon being arrested. They would have been fired if they had not resigned, according to the sheriff’s office.
They'll claim Qualified Immunity, and they'll win because the DA won't be able to find a case in the books where 3 cops were convicted of stealing $723 in a traffic stop that involved drugs.
While I’m sure there are folks who successfully steal millions then fade away and live happily ever after, I find it pathetic that these guys have pissed away good jobs and their freedom for a pittance. Even if it was $50,000, compared to prison and limited opportunities for felons, it was chump change.
And this is yet another reason why qualified and sovereign immunity need to end. Government agents and agencies at every level need to be made accountable for their mis- and malfeasance.
