What Caused the Ammo Shortage? When Will Things Get Better?

In a recent Federal Season Podcast, Federal Ammunition’s President Jason Vanderbrink discusses the shortages of loaded ammunition we have experienced for many months now. And it’s not just loaded ammo — powder and primers are very hard to find and prices are crazy, with 1000 primers selling for $300 or more in recent Gunbroker auctions.

  1. BULLSHIT!

They have cranked up their production but are not shipping anything but finished bullets. Most of what they are pumping out is target ammo in 9mm and .223 calibers. Small producers who cannot make primers or powder are going under because they cannot get the components to produce new or remanufactured loads. The demand is because of the 100 million new gun owners who made their first firearm purchase in the past 18 months. There was almost 17 million guns purchased in 2020.

    1. From the FBI:
Year # Background Checks Pct Change
      2018 26,181,936 base year
      2019 28,369,750 8%
      2020 39,695,315 52%

No all background checks mean a gun purchase, some are CCPs. I think Federal estimated 7M new guns buyers, which would be part of the 11M increase over 2019

  2. That was supposed to be 10 million new gun owners not 100 million.

  3. I imagine, like everything else 2020,the China virus has it's tentacles in it. I've wanted to get a couple new stainless steel pin sets for the G27 and G22 but they've been backordered at Midway and Brownells for months. One day the wuhoo flu will be nothing but a had memory, like when you woke up after a serious drunk with no idea where you were, how you got there and who's the chick sleeping naked beside you. Yes one of those kinds of bad 😳

    2. Cederq. There was about a 10 year or so period that it seemed like I could do no wrong when it came to the tender young hardbellies. I don't know what it was or where it came from or went but man I took advantage of it as often as I could.

See, I've always just relied on my looks and personality to keep them away. And if they keep coming, the lack of a well-funded trust fund usually finishes off the survivors.

  4. Thanks for that, Kenny--it helps to alleviate SOME fears, like the stuff we wonder about, like why did the Obango administration buy 222.2 bazillion rounds of loaded ammo? Wasn't it for the DHS? I still know that "we" have more than "they" do...

    1. It is never about who has the most.
It is who will fight to win.
Not show up to watch or sell shit at the fight
No, this will be about the meanest snakes at the bottom of the pit. The right,as it sets currently, is much too nice. I do feel for those of you just trying to get along who will be the first into the meat grinder. You thought you could appease the animals and they would feed on your neighbors. Newsflash slick, that is the plan for far too many. It will work for most, but those few who get it, ugly it will be. Listen for the screams of the women and children. When you hear them, I hope the thoughts come in your sleep to help you remember, your choices did that.

    2. Besides DHS, it was also for the Postal Service, the IRS and Forest Service 'Law Enforcement', among others. Including the Bureau of Land Management. If you'll remember, it was one of their agent's guns that killed Kate Steinle. And it was probably one of Obango's rounds that penetrated her heart in 2015.

And yes, 'we' have more than 'they' do. WAY more. And 'they' know it.

    3. Don't forget the Department of Education - they gunned up, too.

"And yes, 'we' have more than 'they' do. WAY more. And 'they' know it."

True, but they're willing to use theirs; our side ain't. And they know that, too.

I keep hearing shit like this, but that there is some atheist talk. This will be about loving the Lord and trusting in Him to care for all of us good folks. We have to do our part, including being ready to fight if necessary. However, the right as it sits currently is honest, decent, and law abiding. This fight won't be won through violence but through prayer. Doesn't mean my kit ain't at the ready. Just means I recall the orders of Captain John Parker and Colonel William Prescott, to hold until the time is right.

  5. So here is a question. The military uses large ammo bunkers on every post for the safekeeping and central control/distribution of munitions. Where the heck are all of these civilian agencies storing billions of rounds of live ammunition? I cant imagine that the iRS or the Post Oafish have bunkers for this purpose.

  6. I'm setting on close 50K primers...that kinda makes me rich, right?

    1. Well, that kinda depends on how you define rich.
      If 1000 primers ~ $300, then 50K primers ~ $15K.

  7. Those asking about "where do the fed agencies keep the ammo"...easy answer from the inside:
Most of the agencies have hundreds of offices/locations around the country. Each one may have tens to hundreds if thousands of rounds at any given time.
Pre the Obama era ammo shortage, these agencies kept one year of ammo on hand (this means enough for each gun-toter to qualify twice a year, a set amount of rounds for each one to practice with, enough for an 'operational load', and a small reserve)...during the shortage, the agencies were instructed to keep TWO years of ammo on hand. This is still the rule. It is easy to estimate: pick an agency, look up the amount of agents, officers, investigators, deputies, inspectors, etc. Multiply by the agencies amount of rounds needed for qualification (twice yearly), plus the amount needed for operational load (pistols, rifles, shotguns, subguns, machine guns), add a two year on hand amount of 30%, and add four times that for any annouced new agent classes. That equals an amazing amount.
I was in a fed medium and small office. The small one had under one "hand" of gun carriers and about 75k rounds at any given time.

  8. And NOW for some FACTS. The US ammo manufacturing capacity is roughly Ten Billion rounds per year....give or take a bit. At the PEAK Of World War Two the capacity was just over Twenty Billion Rounds per year. So Ten Billion per year is a pretty good capacity. Now there are roughly 335 million Americans. Divide 10 billion by 335 million and you get THIRTY. Thats right....just THIRTY. Thirty rounds of ammo per person per year. Even if only TEN PERCENT of Americans are shooters that would still be only Three Hundred rounds of ammo per year. Which for a lot of shooters is just a SINGLE AFTERNOON at the range. Now we import a lot of ammo also....perhaps another 10 billion rounds a year. That still leaves a shooter with enough ammo for TWO trips to the range. When you figure that firearm sales have been insanely high for the past year and ALL those new firearm owners are looking for ammo then you can understand why there is a shortage. That shortage drives PANIC.....the emotional response to the sight of empty ammo shelves. So shooters react by buying any and all ammo when and where they can find it. That makes the shortage even worse. Eventually calm....and a lack of money...will prevail and ammo supplies will return. Barring of course the possible/probable ban on ammunition sales the commies in office would like to impose.

  9. 1000 years ago when I was somewhere in the military service of America, I was assigned to a facility for several years. I don't remember all the times the armory was robbed. It was more than three times and less than 20, I think.

All we need to do is figure out where the fedgov stashes their ammo and hit it.
And along with that mindset, I read how lots of people are not supporting pro sport ball because of the moron negros that want to act like idiots hating America. Why don't we just cut them off of their million dollar salaries and they will expire on their own.

  10. Primers for 125 for 500 stopped me from starting back reloading

  11. FYI both Canada and Australia are part of the Covid Charade and BOTH Have AMMO and reloading Components. Both countries CANNOT ship to the US.
