  1. As a Citadel graduate, whose school fired on the union supply ship star of the west in January of 1861, and a born and raised South Carolinian. I continually shake my head at the stupidity of firing on Fort Sumpter.

They would have had to surrender in a couple of weeks. Some victory, we fired on them from behind, it was a "glorious" win. No, it was an idiotic gesture that made Beauregarde into a hero and ruined any chances of a peaceful succession.

Most of my family was in the 14th NC, Ramseurs brigade, rhodes division. I do like seeing the western battles, I know every step of the eastern ones.

Old Fuss and Feathers, Winfield Scott, won the war before it was ever fought with the "Anaconda" plan. To use the navy to bottle up the harbors. There was never a counter for that, although from the docks of the Citadel the Hunley was created, the first submarine to sink a capital ship. We never knew the first crew that died were buried under the end zone of our football stadium.

  2. Capital Ship, I have not heard the term used for a warship in a mighty long time. Thanks for the reminder. Also, enjoyed your take on it all.
