This month, more than 100,000 city public school kids walked out to protest gun violence — but last century some students attended class armed with their rifles and practiced shooting on school grounds.
Many of the city’s public high schools had shooting clubs and a few even had gun ranges on their premises, according to accounts from the Department of Education and others.

"In my day" it wasn't unusual at all during hunting season to see pickups with rifles in the high school parking lot.
ReplyDeleteAnd no one fucked with them -- imagine that.
There were always shotguns or deer rifles in unlocked vehicles in the school parking lot, with rabbit hunting going through March in the U.P.
DeleteThat was before welfare cases were shipped up from Detroit due to "low cost of living" and "good schools" even though average income was on par with Appalachia.
friends came to class with bloody clothing from having shot and gutted deer in the morning before school but didnt want to incur teachers' wrath by being late.
DeleteMeanwhile, in Oregon...

Won't be long before there are subsidies for POC to obtain scarce ammunition.
ReplyDeleteEven out here in LA. I went on shooting courses with the Cub Scouts all the time in the 60's.
ReplyDeleteI graduated High School in 1980 , and I recall hearing lots of the guys I went to school say something like, "I have the shotgun in the truck , want to go chase phesants around after school ?" A few of the kids I went to school brought guns in and refinished the stocks on them nobody thought twice about it (other than how do you mess up a stock that bad ?) there was a shooting range in the basement of the middle school where they had hunter safety classes. not any "diversity ", no crime either ahh the good old days !
ReplyDeleteIn my day, and high school back in the mid 60's, it was very common to have virtually every pickup in the parking lot of any rural, and most urban school grounds, to have gun racks, with rifles, and 90% of the time they were unlocked..... My how far we have fallen as a society..... Now you can trust no one, with the exception of those who respond for a call for help with - Do I Need A Shovel....
